How to Clean and Care for a Copper Still Between Runs

Every run teaches you something. You watch the copper warm up, the vapor rise, and the first drops come off the worm. Then you make your cuts and decide what to keep. That's part alchemy and part lab work. But a good experiment needs a clean setup, and in your still the copper is your lab glassware. If it's dirty, your results will be too.

This guide explains how to clean a copper still between runs. It covers assembled units, kits you solder yourself, electric stills, and flame-flow stills. The basics are the same for all of them. What changes is how you take each one apart and what you need to keep dry.

A quick reminder before we start. Owning a copper still is legal in the United States. Distilling alcohol requires a federal permit from the TTB, and fuel alcohol needs a permit too. Many people use their stills to distill water or essential oils. Whatever you run, follow federal, state, and local law.

Why Copper Needs Regular Care

Copper is the classic still material because it reacts with your vapor. It binds sulfur compounds that would otherwise end up in your distillate, and that's a big reason people choose it. The trade-off is that the reaction leaves residue behind. You'll see dark film, green or blue spots (verdigris), and buildup from whatever you boiled in the pot.

If you leave that residue in place, it will hurt your next run. It can add off flavors and smells, block narrow tubing, and wear the metal faster. A few minutes of cleaning while the still is still fresh saves you a much harder scrub later.

What You'll Need

Leave a few things on the shelf. Don't use steel wool or harsh scouring pads, because they scratch copper and give residue more places to stick. Don't use bleach, and never mix bleach with vinegar or any other acid. The fumes are dangerous.

Step by Step: How to Clean a Copper Still

1. Let it cool, then empty it

Wait until everything has cooled to a safe temperature before you take anything apart. Then drain what's left in the pot. Get rid of spent material properly, and dispose of anything from a fuel or permitted spirits run according to your permit and local rules.

2. Rinse right away

Rinse the pot, cap, thumper, and worm with warm water before residue dries. Fresh residue comes off easily. Dried residue fights back. Run water through the worm and every line until it comes out clear.

3. Wash with mild soap

Wipe down the inside of the pot and cap with warm water and a little unscented dish soap. Use a long brush for the column and connections. Rinse very well afterward. Leftover soap will show up in your next run, so rinse until the water no longer feels slick.

4. Use an acid wash for film and verdigris

Here's where the chemistry pays off. A weak acid breaks down copper oxides and that green verdigris. Mix white vinegar with water, or dissolve citric acid in warm water, and let it sit in the pot or soak the smaller parts. Check every so often, and you'll see the copper brighten as the film dissolves. For a stubborn spot, make a paste of vinegar and salt, rub it in gently, and rinse.

Many distillers also run a vinegar-and-water cleaning run before first use or after a long break. They heat a diluted vinegar solution in the assembled still and let the vapor move through the column and worm. That cleans spots you can't reach with a brush. Throw out whatever comes through, then do a run with plain water to flush the vinegar out.

5. Rinse again, then dry completely

Acid shouldn't stay on copper any longer than needed. Rinse every part thoroughly with clean water. Then dry everything, inside and out. Moisture left sitting is what causes most new tarnish. Leave the parts open and upside down in a spot with good airflow until they're bone dry.

Notes for Each Type of Still

Assembled copper stills

Complete units like the 10 Gallon Advanced Model Complete Copper Moonshine Still or the 50 Gallon Advanced Model Complete Copper Distiller with 10 Gallon Thumper 10 Gallon Worm come apart into a pot, cap, thumper, and worm. Clean each piece by itself. The worm is the part people forget, and it's the part that needs a flush the most.

DIY "EZ KIT" stills

If you soldered your still yourself, for example the 20 Gallon "EZ KIT" Advanced Model, look over your seams every time you clean. Gentle cleaning is kind to solder joints, and scrubbing hard right on a seam isn't. After a soak, check for weak spots or pinholes and fix them before your next run. Building a still yourself means you're also the one who maintains it.

Electric stills

With electric models such as the 10 Gallon Advanced Model Complete 220V Electric Copper Moonshine Still, keep water away from all electrical parts. Unplug the unit before you clean it. Follow the instructions that came with your still for cleaning around the heating parts, and never soak or spray the electrical components. Make sure everything is completely dry before you plug it back in.

Flame-Flow stills

FlameFlow™ stills get the same basic care: rinse, wash gently, use an acid wash when needed, and dry thoroughly. Keep the outside surfaces that face the heat clean as well, since soot and spills can build up there over several runs.

Storing Your Still Between Runs

Make Cleaning Part of the Experiment

Good distillers record their temperatures, cuts, and readings. A tool like a Hydrometer Set helps you track results on permitted runs. A clean still keeps those numbers reliable from one run to the next. When the copper is clean, you know the changes you see come from your process and not from last week's residue.

Treat cleaning as the last step of every run and the first step of the next one. Your copper will last longer, and you'll get more consistent results from it.
